Is AI a Productivity booster? Short answer, yes. Thank you for reading, see you soon. Long story, it's not so easy. Let me drive you through the whys and hows.
Firstly, we need to put some guardrails by agreeing on a few definitions and setting the context. I have been working for now more than two years on implementation, adoption and operational optimization for multiple worldwide companies at scale, including the group I am currently working at, for every kind of profiles, like HR, engineers, C-levels executive, mid-management and so on. So, I will speak from a hands-on experience on strategy for making AI worth it for your team or company.
AI is a bigger topic than most people think, nowadays it is mostly about an agent doing or assisting some task. I know that all my tech fellows will complain about this take, saying that it is too much vulgarisation, but that's fine here. It's not the point. Regardless of the tools, AI or not, the results won't come from the tool only, they will come from how efficiently users will adjust to it. That's why some teams are working and communicating better using real pieces of paper than using an online whiteboard even when they are in both cases in the same situation on-site.
Am I saying that AI is not worth it? No, I am saying that you can't expect everyone and every teams to obtain the same benefits from AI augmented tooling. This being said, you should keep in mind that delivery a piece of work is usually a team work. If you only focus on one profile inside a team instead of thinking on broader scope with a mixed population, your results will hardly become noticeable.
Trick is: don't try implementing tools one by one, focus on changing the mindset and give everyone their tools at the same time, so they can support each other building the culture. It is even better if you let them explore the available tooling for a while asking them to find which one they will adopt for the team.
I understand that many of you have already read marketing articles selling massive productivity increase. This is where you need to use critical thinking and don't get trapped by a play of words. Make sure to not engage your responsibility on these numbers and make your owns.
